Gordon and Eben talk Pi (and other things)

Gordon Hollingworth, our Director of Software, has been Googling himself, and mailed me to let me know about this video he found from Richard Ibbotson. Richard came by Pi Towers last month and filmed this little interview with Gordon and Eben – it’s worth a watch if you’re interested in what goes on behind the scenes. Enjoy!

DIY Haunted Mansion portrait

Welcome, foolish mortals. I’m with Cory Doctorow on this one: the Haunted Mansion is the best thing at the Disney parks. It’s a close-run fight with the Tower of Terror, but for me, the Haunted Mansion comes out on top every time

XBMC performance demo

One of the areas we’re putting a lot of work into is XBMC performance – we’ve been a bit shocked on working through some data * to find that the Pi now appears to have more XBMC users than any other platform in the world, bar the PC (we’ve overtaken cracked Apple TV 2s), and we want to make sure you have the best possible experience with the software. (If you’ve started reading this and don’t understand a word of that first paragraph, head over to XBMC’s website to find out what XBMC is, what a media centre is and why you might want one, and then come back here.) Dom Cobley and Ben Avison have been working on the platform for us, and the results so far are pretty impressive: video playback has always been good, but they’ve really tidied up the user experience in the menu in particular, and browsing through your media collection, even if it’s as big as Dom’s, is now much smoother and faster. We’ve seen people online (particularly over on the XBMC forums – and  particularly particularly in response to posts asking for recommendations for cheap XBMC platforms) calling Pi users fanbois, and announcing that the Pi is too laggy to be a real media player

LinuxCon keynote

The video of Eben’s LinuxCon keynote has just been made available: enjoy. If you’re one of those people who watches everything we do (we know you are out there, and you fascinate, delight and horrify us in equal measure), you’ll be familiar with most of the first 9 minutes or so. Scroll past that for the juicy stuff

Tudor theatre, 21st century technology

This summer, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre in London mounted a production of all three of Shakespeare’s Henry VI plays, staged both at Shakespeare’s Globe itself, and outdoors at battlefield sites from the War of the Roses. The theatre collaborated with The Space , a new Arts Council and BBC-developed service which streams free, on-demand video of live cultural events, to produce a broadcast of the plays from multiple viewpoints.

Classic Macintosh Created With Raspberry Pi Is Cutest Mac Ever – Huffington Post UK

MacDaddyNews.com Classic Macintosh Created With Raspberry Pi Is Cutest Mac Ever Huffington Post UK Leake had to slightly 'modify' the standard Raspberry Pi by trimming the SD card and USB cable. Its .5-inch display gives a decent 512 x 384 pixels and you can even hook up a keyboard and mouse

Nintendo audio – on analogue instruments

I don’t know much about this project. I spotted it earlier today on Twitter, where all I had to go on was this: I have a friend named Dave; Dave is a genius. You all need to check out his latest project (feat.

Fireball Pinball HD

We had some requests from people watching the video of What Gordon Did On His Holidays In Florida for more information about the Fireball Pinball machine that was being worked on at Familab, a huge and splendiferous hackspace. I wanted to learn more too, so I got in touch with Ian Cole, who is refurbishing the pinball machine. He’s been kind enough to prepare a blog post about the project, the educational reasons for starting it with his kids, and a blow-by-blow account of the build, along with a huge number of photographs documenting what he’s been doing
