Happy 3rd birthday Raspberry Pi! – BetaNews

USA TODAY Happy 3rd birthday Raspberry Pi ! BetaNews Raspberry Pi celebrates its third birthday today. Well actually it doesn't, as the super-affordable ARM GNU/Linux computer was launched on February 29 2012, in what was (obviously) a leap year, but it's close enough. In that time the Raspberry Pi has

Teaching literature with Raspberry Pi

Last week, checking out posts people had made on our Facebook page and the projects they were telling us about, one in particular caught my attention. Sarah Roman , a high school English teacher from New Jersey, had written: Our English class is going to be using the Raspberry Pi in order to build book-based video games, incorporating Scratch, Sonic Pi, and Python. The students are incredibly excited […] There was a link to an Indiegogo campaign ; we love to see Raspberry Pi used creatively outside of computing lessons, so I clicked on it

Halloween!

There’s a lot of spooky Pi shenanigans going on this Halloween. Here at Pi Towers, our very own Rachel Rayns is trialling the first run of the Raspberry Pi Digital Creatives Bronze award we plan to be running formally from 2015. (More of that in a later post.) Amy and Dan Mather are acting as our guinea pigs for this trial; and here are the (orange, approximately spherical) fruits of their first day’s labour. I’ll be prodding the Mather kids for a write-up on how to rotoscope your own face onto a pumpkin soon

Ben’s USA Tour Dates

Today I fly to New York to start my Raspberry Pi USA Tour! Thanks to everyone who submitted a request for me to speak for them while on my USA Tour. I’ve adjusted my route according to where most of the requests were located, and I’ve been organising dates with those who contacted me

Internet of Things toilet

There are many things that happen in my bathroom which I wish to keep private. But over at Instructables , member  e024576 (about whom all we know is that he’s male and aged 59 – judging by the accent he uses in the video below when he runs out of loo-roll, he’s also from somewhere in the lower half of the USA) has been able to power through any bathroom-related shame to work out what toilet events can be usefully hooked up to the cloud without causing any personal embarrassment, all with the potential for making your toilet experience smoother, more environmentally friendly and less fraught with worry that the paper might have run out

Graphic equaliser

Our good friends at Adafruit put this project on their Learning System earlier this month. It’s a beaut: you’ll learn something making it, and it looks fantastic when set up. Before we get into the nitty gritty, here’s some video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMPJH1LOu50 This graphic equaliser (a spectrum analys/zer if you’re from the USA) is made from a RGB led strip, with everything down to the audio processing run on the Pi

Halloween costumes: Doc Brown

Halloween’s a little way off yet, but here in the USA, preparations are in full swing. (Can someone explain to me what earthly use a Pumpkin Spice Latte is in New Orleans, with temperatures above 30ºC and 100% humidity?) Halloween cards are in the shops, vampire teeth are on sale on every street corner. We know many of you are making costumes for Halloween which incorporate a Pi, and we hope more of you will mail us (or leave a note in the comments) to let us know about them and share your builds in time for the end of October
