At primary school, I loved my Tamagotchi: it moved, it beeped, it was almost like I could talk to it! Nowadays, kids can actually have conversations with their toys, and some toys are IoT devices, capable of accessing online services or of interacting with people via the Internet.

element14 Pi IoT Smarter Spaces Design Challenge

Earlier this year, I was asked to be a judge for the element14 Pi IoT Smarter Spaces Design Challenge. It has been fantastic to be involved in a contest where so many brilliant ideas were developed. The purpose of the competition was to get designers to use a kit of components that included Raspberry Pi, various accessories, and EnOcean products, to take control of the spaces they are in.

Beer and Wine Fridge of Awesomeness

Jamie Bailey from Initial State , the Internet of Things (IoT) data solutions company, recently posted this how-to for creating a Beer/Wine Fridge of Awesomeness : How do you take a perfectly good beer or wine fridge and make it awesome? A good start is to have your refrigerator tell you how many bottles are in it, when the door is open or closed, and the temperature inside your fridge.

Internet of Things toilet

There are many things that happen in my bathroom which I wish to keep private. But over at Instructables , member e024576 (about whom all we know is that he’s male and aged 59 – judging by the accent he uses in the video below when he runs out of loo-roll, he’s also from somewhere in the lower half of the USA) has been able to power through any bathroom-related shame to work out what toilet events can be usefully hooked up to the cloud without causing any personal embarrassment, all with the potential for making your toilet experience smoother, more environmentally friendly and less fraught with worry that the paper might have run out
