Harry Potter and the Real-Life Daily Prophet

Most people would visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and bring back a few souvenirs to adorn their shelves. But for Piet Rullens Jr , with a video from his trip to hand, that simply wasn’t enough. Astro Pi: Goodnight, Mr Tim

On Saturday, British ESA astronaut Tim Peake returned to Earth after six months on the International Space Station. During his time in orbit, he did a huge amount of work to share the excitement of his trip with young people and support education across the curriculum: as part of this, he used our two Astro Pi computers, Izzy and Ed , to run UK school students’ code and play their music in space.

‘Educating with Raspberry Pi’ at Maker Faire

You may have noticed on Twitter (or from their absence) that some of our team were away in San Francisco last week for Maker Faire. Clive, Carrie Anne and Alex Bradbury joined forces with  Pimoroni  and ran a stall promoting Raspberry Pi and its use in education. Here’s a video  MAKE  put out, featuring Clive talking about some of our recent developments such as the  free educational material  for everyone to  teach ,  learn  and  make  with Raspberry Pi: The team spoke to a lot of people at Maker Faire, gave talks, visited hackspaces and crammed a lot of outreach in to the trip – so once they’ve recovered we’ll be sharing their experiences and adventures in further blog posts.

Oracle Java on Raspberry Pi

One of our longstanding goals has been for Raspberry Pi to ship with a complete set of common programming languages. Until now, there’s been one glaring omission from this list: Java, which by some estimates is the most popular language of all (duck and cover – flamewar incoming). It’s therefore fantastic to be able to announce that we’ve added the official hard-float Oracle Java 7 JDK to our repository.
