Astro Pi Coding Challenges: a message from Tim Peake

Back in February, we announced an extension to the Astro Pi mission in the form of two coding challenges. The first required you to write Python Sense HAT code to turn Ed and Izzy (the Astro Pi computers) into an MP3 player, so that Tim Peake could plug in his headphones and listen to his music

Sonic Dreams with Meta-eX and Sonic Pi

Dr Sam Aaron is the creator of our musical programming environment, Sonic Pi, and a researcher at the University of Cambridge Computer Lab by day. By night he’s something else altogether. The music from this video by his band, Meta-eX , was all composed on a Raspberry Pi using Sonic Pi.

New Raspbian and NOOBS releases

If you head over to the downloads page, you’ll find new versions of our Raspbian image and NOOBS installer. Alongside the usual firmware and kernel improvements, major changes to the Raspbian image include: Java updated to JDK 8 Mathematica updated to version 10 Sonic Pi updated to version 2 Minecraft Pi pre-installed Following its release last week, of our port of Epiphany has replaced Midori as the default browser, bringing with it hardware-accelerated video support and better standards compliance. Epiphany is now the default browser Our Raspbian image now includes driver support for the BCM43143 802.11n WiFi chip

Sonic Pi v2.0 competition for schools is launched!

This week, Dr Sam Aaron released the much anticipated final version of Sonic Pi v2.0. It will be replacing Sonic Pi v1 on Raspbian very soon, and you will be able to get it via our Downloads page (we will let you know when).

Sonic Pi Competition

Coding music on a Raspberry Pi with Sonic Pi has quickly become a great way to learn programming concepts and to pump out some thumping beats. Last year I worked with Dr Sam Aaron , live coder and academic at the University of Cambridge, to teach KS3 pupils text-based programming on Raspberry Pis as part of their ICT & Computing lessons. Since then Sonic Pi has proved incredibly popular in classrooms worldwide.

Sonic Pi – a free music and computing resource for teachers, and for the rest of us

Carrie Anne Philbin, an absolutely inspirational CS teacher of the sort I wish had been around when I was a kid, has been doing a lot of work with the Pi in her lessons over the last year or so.
