Aquarium lighting and weather system

We spotted this aquarium project on YouTube, and were struck with searing pangs of fishy jealousy; imagine having a 2000-litre slice of the Cayman Islands, complete with the weather as it is right now , in your living room. aMGee has equipped his (enormous) tropical fish tank, full of corals as well as fish, with an IoT Raspberry Pi weather system. It polls a weather station in the Cayman Islands every two minutes and duplicates that weather in the tank: clouds; wind speed and direction; exact sunset and sunrise times; and moon phase, including the direction the moon travels across the tank

Roberts R300 Reinvention

Liz: today’s guest post comes from Gordon at IQAudIO , who makes and sells audio accessories for the Pi, which we really, really like – with one of his DACs you can turn your Pi into a proper audiophile-approved piece of kit. Gordon had made a project we really liked the look (and sound) of when we last saw him, so I asked him to write it up. Over to Gordon: When my grandmother passed away many years ago I was asked if there was anything of hers I’d like to have in order to remember her by. The choice at the time was pretty easy for me – her bright red Roberts radio.

Picademy North at the National STEM Centre

Once again the Raspberry Pi Foundation Education Team is taking Picademy , the official Raspberry Pi professional development course for teachers, on the road. This time to the North , thanks to our friends at the National STEM Centre in York! The National STEM Centre houses the UK’s largest collection of STEM teaching and learning resources, and high-quality subject specific CPD, in order to provide teachers of STEM subjects with the ability to access a wide range of high-quality support materials. We work with business, industry, charitable organisations, professional bodies and others with an interest in STEM education to facilitate closer collaboration and more effective support for schools and colleges, and promotion of STEM careers awareness.

Benchmarking Raspberry Pi 2

If you follow us on Twitter , you’ll notice that I put a call out earlier today for people who’d benchmarked their Raspberry Pi 2 – I wanted to be able to share some benchmarking results with you this afternoon. @Raspberry_Pi I’ve been running the Octane javascript benchmark on Node.JS and getting ~6X faster on the ‘2 (and it’s single threaded!) — Stewart X Addison (@sxaTech) February 5, 2015 @Raspberry_Pi SunSpider Javascript benchmark completes in 4452.1ms on Raspberry Pi 2, compared with 23692.7ms on Raspberry Pi Model B+

London Raspberry Jam 3.01.13

Alan O’Donohoe @teknoteacher writes: Around 70 children, parents and teachers had a great time at the London Raspberry Jam organised by parent Paul Evans on Thursday 3rd January. In the few days before Christmas, Paul imagined that there would be many Raspberry Pi computers in Christmas stockings leaving the recipients of these gifts a little puzzled.
