Raspberry Pi as car computer

Carputers! Fabrice Aneche is documenting his ongoing build , which equips an older (2011) car with some of the features a 2018 model might have: thus far, a reversing camera (bought off the shelf, with a modified GUI to show the date and the camera’s output built with Qt and Golang), GPS and offline route guidance. We’re not sure how the car got through that little door there. It was back in 2013, when the Raspberry Pi had been on the market for about a year, that we started to see carputer projects emerge.

Raspbery Pi-newood Derby

Andre Miron’s Pinewood Derby Instant Replay System (sorry, not sorry for the pun in the title) uses a Raspberry Pi to monitor the finishing line and play back a slow-motion instant replay, putting an end to “No, I won!” squabbles once and for all. Raspberry Pi Based Pinewood Derby Instant Replay Demo This is the same system I demo in this video (https://youtu.be/-QyMxKfBaAE), but on our actual track with real pinewood derby cars.

The world’s largest Raspberry Pi display?

David Whale, a STEM ambassador and all-round good egg, mailed me last week to tell me about a project he’d been involved in at Goodwood race course. The Greenpower Education Trust run an electric car series for schools and businesses, where students and staff build electric race cars, and compete in 4hr mileage marathons around the country. Essex Goblins 2013 They’ve been doing a lot of work with Raspberry Pis (many of the cars have a Raspberry Pi inside), and asked David if he could use a Raspberry Pi to populate a giant display at the Goodwood course with race information.

Carputers – some ideas to get you started

We are firm believers in the idea that computing starts to get really interesting – interesting enough to suck in people who have never programmed before – when you begin interfacing software with real things made out of atoms. That’s why there are GPIO pins on the Pi (another reason you should never tread on one with bare feet). Here are some resources to get you started with some real-world hacking: namely, hacking your car.

Preston Raspberry Jam, 01.07.13

Silicon Bus Stop: A change of venue On Monday 1st July we held our Preston Raspberry Jam at the CPC offices in Fulwood, Preston. We normally hold our Jam events at the University, but I wanted to explore the use of different venue. I had been to visit the offices a few times before and wondered if it would make a suitable location for holding events.
