Skycademy Update

The last month here at Pi Towers has been a busy one, as we’ve been preparing for our first ever Skycademy event. Since announcing it a couple of months ago we’ve had a great response from educators and youth leaders looking to run their own high-altitude project. Having only ever done one launch myself, the team and I decided that a practice run was necessary

PatternCraft

Carrie Anne looked over my shoulder when I was researching this post. “I love kids with tools.” These particular kids with tools are using traditional wooden mallets and punches to make a very special set of punchcards, which they’re reading with a Raspberry Pi that creates a CSV file of 0s and 1s, and then interprets that data in the Minecraft universe. This workshop project is the work of Gemma May Latham , a collaborative maker, and David Whale, who, with Martin O’Hanlon, wrote the most excellent Adventures in Minecraft

We were very excited to welcome children’s TV presenter Frankie Vu from CBBC’s Technobabble , a TV show for children dedicated to explaining how technology works in a fun way, to Pi Towers towards the end of 2014 to talk about how computers are often found inside lots of different appliances, toys, and products. In an  episode  dedicated to Computing , Carrie Anne demonstrates some of our fun projects such as the weather station project and hamster party cam , both of which you can make and build with your students thanks to our free resources

Welcome Craig!

Eagle-eyed followers of all things Pi will have noticed that Craig Richardson , Minecraft savant (here’s his free book on teaching with Minecraft , which should be required reading for all teachers – and here are some recipe cards he’s produced to get your kids started) and all-round lovely chap, has been popping up a lot in photos of the office on Twitter recently. Craig’s been hanging out here a lot, not least because he started a full-time role with the education team here at Pi Towers yesterday
