Tudor theatre, 21st century technology

This summer, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre in London mounted a production of all three of Shakespeare’s Henry VI plays, staged both at Shakespeare’s Globe itself, and outdoors at battlefield sites from the War of the Roses. The theatre collaborated with The Space , a new Arts Council and BBC-developed service which streams free, on-demand video of live cultural events, to produce a broadcast of the plays from multiple viewpoints.

Babbage’s big jump: the aftermath

If you were following the live feed and our live tweets on Saturday, you’ll know that Babbage the bear’s attempt to beat Felix Baumgartner’s stratospheric parachute jump with a couple of Raspberry Pis was a bit of a curate’s egg . It was a very blustery, cloudy day at the launch site, and while Babbage made it into the stratosphere ( beating the world record – also held by Dave Akerman , who was behind this weekend’s launches – for highest pictures transmitted live from an amateur device), he did not separate from his platform properly, so rather than leaping into the void, he plummeted, platform and all, when the balloon burst at 41.109km, and fell to earth under the tatters of the balloon. We were able to use GPS to work out where he had landed (in the middle of a barley field somewhere in rural Berkshire), and retrieved him

Monday is Minecraft day. Is everybody happy? You bet your life we are!

Raspberry Pi Mineday is upon us and there’s just time before Liz comes back and kicks me off for messing about to get in a few posts about one of my pet subjects — learning through play. In this case, learning through playing Minecraft. Hurrah!  I can sometimes be found playing the Xbox version in a darkened room, rocking gently and mumbling, “Why dig when you can code

Why Raspberry Pi can be as vital to the UK as the Spectrum or BBC Micro – TechRadar UK

Why Raspberry Pi can be as vital to the UK as the Spectrum or BBC Micro TechRadar UK The Raspberry Pi is partially Braben's answer to this, although he believes that there are social changes needed; not least the need to persuade talented young programmers to eschew the big money jobs in the city and work in areas that interest them …

Lincoln University’s digital garden, and its gold medal

At this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, Lincoln University’s digital garden, which changed the way it looked depending on what people tweeted, sent messages back to people interacting with it, and did all kinds of interesting things with twenty servo motors and a lot of hinges, won a gold medal. See if you can guess what was powering it. We were sent some BBC news coverage, which, sadly, doesn’t actually mention the Pi behind the scenes (although it is beyond delightful for us to see Ringo Starr looking interestedly at it) – but you can read more about the Pi’s involvement, and the philosophy behind the garden, over at the Times Educational Supplement
